Old soldiers never die
by Abraham Khoureis, Ph.D., M.A.
“Old soldiers never die, they just fade away”. With their departure all is left to us to hold on are their cherished memories. Some memories with time will fade away while others will linger as if they never left anyway.
Nowadays, Memorial Day is a day of appreciation, honoring the fallen, and reflection.
Appreciation for the sacrifices made by the fallen for us to live in a society free of tyranny, oppression, racism, and disregard of the law.
We appreciate the fact that democracy with all of its challenges is still a functioning form of government to maintain the principles of the Constitution in which these brave Heroes faded away in order to preserve and cherish.
Yes, they faded away in order to preserve and maintain our freedom, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.
Yet, as we reflect on the affairs of our today’s leadership and how it is morphed into benefiting the interests of the few (1% mega rich) of the population. We hope, with the spirit of their sacrifices the system of Checks and Balances will guarantee our society its freedom from tyranny, cruelty, and the rule of the Absolute One.
Let us continue making Memorial Day a day of appreciation, honoring the fallen, and reflection. A day of unity.
“Old soldiers never die, they just fade away”.
